Food Gifts
Before
you prepare food gifts and stick them in the mail, you must consider
what you are sending, when you are sending it, and where you are sending
it to.
· Moist to mold – very moist food gifts, like banana nut
bread or pumpkin bread, are susceptible to mold.
· Chocolate melts – chocolate bars and even the chocolate
chips of cookies can melt and become a sticky mess. The best time to
mail chocolate is during the winter – there is no guarantee that
it will never melt (just being inside the post office can cause meltage),
but it is less likely. Even chocolate that is being sent a short distance
(and may therefore not melt in the mail) could be set on a porch in
the sun until the recipient brings the mail in.
· Fragile items break – cookies are not likely to make
it one piece, nor are potato chips and other such food gifts.
· Don’t send meat – unless it’s prepackaged
beef jerky, meat is perishable. To remain healthy, it needs to be kept
at no higher than 40 degrees Fahrenheit, and there is no guarantee that
it will be. You can, however, do as they do at Pike Place Market in
Seattle when they mail fish – they package the fish in cold boxes
and have them overnighted.
· Don’t mail your food gifts over a weekend – the
US postal service most certainly does not run on Sundays, so be sure
to send your food gifts at a time when they will not be stuck in the
packing room at a post office on a Sunday! Send them on Monday, for
instance.
· Glass breaks – avoid sending anything in a glass jar.
Alright, enough about the food gifts that are difficult to send via
the US postal service, here are some food gifts that should make it,
even if you are sending them to US armed services overseas:
· Beef jerky
· Biscotti, commercially packaged cookies, ginger snaps, and
other dense and dry baked goods
· Canned foods (like dips and crackers)
· Dried fruits
· Hard candies
· Dehydrated food and drinks (even astronaut ice cream can be
fun)
It is still possible to send some really great food gifts while being
wary of the postal service and what may happen to the gifts during transit!
